WSOP winner celebrates title and birthday

2010-06-03 10:59:48

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is in full swing now and the third recipient of a gold bracelet is Michael Chow.

It proved to be one of the best birthday presents ever for the now 33-year-old, as he also scooped $237,463 for his troubles.

He triumphed in the $1,500 buy-in Omaha high-low split poker tournament after taking veteran Dan Heimiller heads-up, while every final table participant had at least one prior WSOP in-the-money finish.

"I have been working hard trying to make a living for the past four or five years," Chow said. "I have had cashes here and there. But to win a gold bracelet, that's everything to me."

The card sharp spends his time trawling the high-stakes cash games in his native Hawaii, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

He bested 817 other competitors in what was the third-largest field ever assembled for this type of event in the WSOP's history.

Writing in her Guardian column, Victoria Coren praised the tight play of the first winner at the 2010 WSOP, Hoai Pham.
