Poker Glossary Terms

Ace
A card with a single spot to indicate it’s ranking as either the highest or lowest card in the deck, depending on the situation. In a high card game, it ranks higher than the King, except when it is deemed the lowest card in a 5-high straight 5-4-3-2-A. In a low card game, it ranks below the 2.
Add-on
In a live game, to purchase more chips before you have busted. In tournament play, a single rebuy for which all players are eligible regardless of their stack size. This is usually allowed only once, at the end of the rebuy period.
Aggressive
A player who bets and raises a when he has a good hand.
All-In
To bet all your chips, or to call with all your chips. If another player bets more chips than you have in a No Limit game, you can go all-in and stake your total stack against an equivalent amount of your opponent's stack.
Ante
A small portion of a bet contributed by each player to seed the pot at the beginning of a poker hand. Most hold'em games do not have an ante; they use "blinds" to get initial money into the pot - one big blind and one small determined by the table limit.

Bad Beat
To have a hand that is a large underdog beat a heavily favored hand. For example, a four of a kind getting beaten by a higher four of a kind or even by a straight flush.

Bankroll
The amount of money you have to play poker with.
Bet
1. Any money wagered during a hand of poker.
2. More specifically, the opening bet of a round of betting.
3. In a fixed limit game, the standard betting amount. For examle, 'there were four bets in the pot when I called.'
Betting Stakes
"The limits of all bets and raises permitted.For example, a 'low stakes' game might be a $10 buy-in with a $1 maximum raise."
Big Blind
A designated amount that is placed by the player sitting in the second position, clockwise from the dealer, before any cards are dealt. Generally, the "big blind" is equal to the minimum bet.
Big Slick
A hand that contains an Ace and a King (A-K).
Blind
The bet or bets that must be made by the two players sitting directly to the dealer's left which will start the action on the first round of betting. The blinds are posted before any cards are dealt.
Bluff
To make other players believe that one has a better hand than he/she might actually have by betting or raising when they do not have the best hand.
Bottom Pair
"When a player uses the lowest card on the flop to make a pair with one of his own cards. For example, if you have Js-6s, and the flop comes Kd-Th-6c, you have flopped bottom pair."
Bubbled
To be the eliminated from a tournament in the last place before the pize-money.
Button
Also known as the dealer button, it is moved from player to player in a clockwise direction following each hand, to theoretically indicate the dealer of each hand.
Buy-In
"The minimum amount of money required by a player to sit down in a particular poker game. This is usually determined by the stakes of the table. For example, the minimum buy in for the 1/2 EUR table on InterPoker is 40 EUR."

Call To
call is to match a bet or match a raise. A betting round ends when all active players have bet an equal amount or no opponents call a player's bet or raise. If no opponents call a player's bet or raise, the player wins the pot.
Caller
One who makes a call bet.
Chat
A feature on InterPoker's online tables where players can communicate with each other by typing messages.
Check
When it's a player's turn to act and there has been no action in front of them and he opts not to bet, he 'checks.'
Check-Raise
When a player first checks and then raises in a betting round. For example, this is done in an attempt to "trap" an opponent into betting to win more chips from them.
Chip
A round token used in place of cash at a gaming table. In the online games these are used to represent your bankroll at the table.
Community cards
Cards that are turned face up in the middle of the table, and which belong to all the players still in the hand. Community cards are used in Hold 'em and Omaha.
Connector
A hold'em starting hand in which the two cards are one apart in rank. Examples: QJ, 87.
Counterfeit
To make your hand less valuable because of community cards that duplicate it. Example: you have 87 and the flop comes 9-T-J, so you have a straight. Now an 8 comes on the turn. This has counterfeited your hand and made it almost worthless.

Deal
To give each player their cards, or put cards on the board. As used in these rules, each deal refers to the entire process from the shuffling and dealing of cards until the pot is awarded to the winner. This is done by the operator in online poker.
Dealer
The man or woman who handles the cards, gives out the pots, and monitors the game. In InterPoker's case the software delas the cards.
Dealers Button
Also known as just the 'button', it is moved from player to player in a clockwise direction following each hand, to theoretically indicate the dealer of each hand.
Deck
"The deck is a set of playing-cards. In these games, the deck consists of either:
1) 52 cards in seven-card stud, hold’em, and Omaha.
2) 53 cards (including the joker), often used in ace-to-five lowball and draw high. "
Diamonds
One of the four playing card suits with the diamond symbol to represent the suit.
Disconnect Protection
A tool to protect players in the event that their internet connection is lost while involved in a pot. Also known as "All-in protection".
Donkey
Stupid, weak player who makes uncalculated moves. For example, 'Let's play in this poker room. it is full of donkeys'
Double Up
The term to describe going all in on a hand during a no-limit game and winning, which essentially doubles your bankroll.
Drawing
Playing a hand to improve when the rest of the community cards are dealt. Usually to a straight or flush.
Drawing Dead
A drawing hand that will lose even if it improves when faced against a better hand.

Early Position
Position on a round of betting where the player must act before most of the other players at the table. (It's considered the two positions located to the left of the Blinds. )
Elimination
The term to describe being knocked out of a tournament or a cash game if your bankroll has been depleted.
Entry Fee
An entry fee is usually payable for all tournaments (unless they are freerolls) these may be as little as a few cents or raked hands requirements or as large as thousands of dollars. Often there will also be an additional rake taken of 10% of the entry fee.
Equity
One's mathematical expected value from the current hand of poker, calculated by multiplying the amount of money in the pot by one's probability of winning.

Facecard
A picture card - a king, a queen, or a jack.
Fish
A player who makes stupid poker moves and therefore loses money.
Flop
In Hold'em and Omaha, the first three community cards that are dealt face-up in the center of the table all at one time. The 'flop' also indicates the second round of betting.
Flush
A hand comprising five cards of the same suit. For example, two diamons in your hand and three more on the board will give you a flush.
Flush Draw
When a player has four cards in his hand of the same suit and is hoping to draw a fifth from the board to make a flush.
Fold
To fold is to discard a hand and forfeit interest in the current pot. No further bets are required by the folding player, but the player cannot win.
Four of a Kind
A hand when all 4 cards are of the same face value
Fourth Street
The fourth of five cards dealt to the board, constituting one face-up community card that each of the players in the game can use to make up their final hand.
Free Card
When a player gets to see the turn card or river card without having to call a bet from the players involved in the hand.
Freeroll
A tournament which is free to play, and still includes a cash prize pool
Freeze-Out
A poker tournament which allows no subsequent rebuys.
Full House
"Three cards of the same rank, and two cards of a different, matching rank. Usage: Three kings and two 3s is a full house, often known as kings full, and sometimes more specifically as kings full of 3s. "

Gut Shot
To draw to and/or hit a straight. For instance, a player has A, 2, 4 and 5, requiring a 3 to complete a straight.

Heads Up
A pot that contested by only two players. Usage: Like in sentence "It was heads up by the turn".
Hold'em
Short for Texas Hold 'em.
Hole Cards
These are the cards dealt directly to the player.
House Rules
The Poker Room's agreed rules.

Late Position
Position of a player on a round of betting where the player acts later than most of the other players in the pot (usually considered to be the two positions next to the right of the button).
Limit
The maximum bet or raise allowed.
Limit Poker
A game that has fixed minimum and maximum betting intervals along with a prescribed number of raises.
Loose
Is a player who will generally call a lot of raises, and therefore play lots of hands.

Middle Pair
In flop games, when a player makes a pair with one of his/her whole cards and the middle card on the flop. Usage: Like in sentence "You have Ad 9h in your hand, the flop is Ks 9s 6h. You have a pair of Nines, the middle pair."
Minimum Buy-In
The minimum amount that you can bring to the table
Missed Blind
When a player fails to post either the Big Blind or Small Blind, therefore missing out on the hand and being dealt out.
Muck
The pile of cards that are no longer in play. If a player has 'mucked,' then his/her cards have been discarded with the rest of the 'muck'.

No Limit
A game where player's betting amounts are uncapped, and can bet as much as their chipstack.
Nut Flush
The 'nut' means the best possible hand, 'nut flush is the best flush available within each hand.
Nuts
The best possible hand at that point, which cannot be beat by any hand.

Odds
The probability of making a hand vs. the probability of not making a hand.
Offsuit
Where cards of a different suit.
Omaha
A game in which each player is dealt four down cards with five community cards. To make your hand, you must play two cards from your hand and three from the board.
On the Button
The position where a player is last to act on a round of betting, this position is usually made visible by the dealer button (normally a white hockey puck).
On Tilt
Reckless play, normally as a result of frustration.
Open End
A four-card sequence that can be made a into a Straight by either the lower or higher end. Usage: 3,4,5,6 can be completed by either a '2' (lower end) or a '7' (higher end) to attain a Straight.
Outs
The number of cards left in the deck that will improve your hand.
Over the top
When you re-raise another player’s raise, you are said to be “Going over the top of him”.
Overcards
Cards that rank higher than what is on the board.
Overpair
A pocket pair higher than any of the cards on the board.

Two cards of the same face or number value.
Pass
To fold.
Passive
Playing cautiously, by only checking or calling hands and folding subsequent bets without challenging for pots unless
Picture Cards
Face cards (Jack, Queen and King).
Play the Board
To show down a hand in hold'em when your cards don't make a hand any better than is shown on the board.
Pocket
The down cards or hole cards.
Poker
A money-management game that uses cards for manipulation and deception for winning.
Poker Face
A face showing no emotion.
Poker room
1) the unique poker software where players can win money. Advanced software has a connection to internet what gives the feature to play with other players online.
2) the facility in casino or at home where poker games are played at special table.
Position
Position in poker refers to the order in which players are seated around the table and the related poker strategy implications. Players who act first are in "early position"; players who act later are in "late position".
Pot
The money or chips in the center of a table that players try to win.
Pot Limit
This is a game where the maximum bet is capped to however much there is in the pot.
Pot Odds
The amount of money in the pot compared to the amount you must put in the pot to continue playing.
Preflop
The stage of the game before any of the community cards have been dealt.

Four of a kind.
Qualifier
In High-Low games, it is a requirement the Low hand must meet to win the pot.

Rainbow
A flop where all three cards are of different suit.
Raise
To raise is to increase the size of the bet required to stay in the pot, forcing all subsequent players to call the new amount if they wish to remain in. If the current bet amount is nothing, this action is considered the opening bet.
Rake
InterPoker (and almost every other poker venue and site) makes money by collecting a set percentage of the total pot at the end of every hand. This is called "rake", and is essentially what you pay us to play on our site.
Re-buy
The amount of money a player pays to add a fixed number of chips to his/her stack in a tournament. Players are sometimes allowed to rebuy chips one or more times for a limited period after the start of the game,
Re-raise
To put in an additional raise after one has been raised. Also known as coming "over the top".
Reading
Analysis of a player based on how they may behave, play, mannerisms, and tells.
Ring Game
A "cash" game that is not a tournament. InterPoker offers a wide range of ring games with different buyin levels and on different games. Unlike tournaments, 'ring games' usually have no predetermined end time, with players able to enter and leave as they see fit.
River
This is the last card given in all games. In Hold'em and Omaha, it is sometimes known as 5th street. In Stud games, it is also known as 7th street. This final card dealt is often referred to as the 'River' card.
Royal Flush
This is an Ace high straight (A-K-Q-J-10) of the same suit. It is the best possible hand in almost all forms of poker.

Satellite
A satellite is a mini-tournament in which the prize is entrance to another ( often larger) tournament. InterPoker run Satellites throughout the day to big cash guaranteed and live tournament finals
Seat Position
The position of a player relative to the other players which has related poker strategy implications. Players who act first are said to be in "early position"; players who act later are in "late position".
Second Pair
In flop games, when you pair the second highest card on the board or you hold a pair which is second to the potential best hand on the board, your hand is classified as 'second pair'
Semi-Bluff
When a player bluffs on a round of betting with an imediocre or drawing hand that might improve in a later round.
Set
Also known as 'Three of a Kind' a 'Set' involves having a pocket pair that matches one of the cards on the board. This is different to 'Trips' when a card matches a pair on the board.
Seven-card Stud
A well-known poker game in which players get three down cards and four up cards. You play the best five of those seven cards. Click here for information on Seven-card Stud.
Shoot-out
A poker tournament format where the last remaining player of a table goes on to play the remaining players of other tables. Each table plays independently of the others; that is, there is no balancing as players are eliminated.
Short Stack
A number of chips that is not very many compared to the other players at the table. If you have €10 in front of you, and everybody else at the table has over €100, you would be considered to be playing a short stack.
Short-Handed
A poker game that is played with around six players or less, as opposed to a full ring game, which is usually nine or ten players
Showdown
At the end of the final betting round, it's when all active players turn their cards face-up to see who has won the pot.
Shuffle
The act of mixing the cards before a hand to ensure the distribution of cards is random.
Side Bet
Any bet made outside the pot.
Side Pot
A separate pot(s) which is contested by remaining active players when one or more players are all-in.
Sitting Out
This is when you choose to leave a table for a few hands. If a Player sits out for more than a specified period tme, or has missed a predefined number of blinds, they are liable to be removed from the table.
Small Blind
The amount put in the pot by the person immediately to the left of the dealer "button" prior to the cards being dealt.
Split Pot
A pot which is shared by two or more players because they have equivalent hands.
Stack
A pile of chips.
Stake
The amount of a player's BUY-IN, or the amount of money they are willing to play with in a given session.
Steal
In poker, a steal is a type of a bluff, a raise during the first betting round made with an inferior hand and meant to make other players fold superior hands because of shown strength. A steal is normally either an "ante steal" or "blind steal" (depending on whether the game being played uses antes or blinds).
Straddle
A straddle bet is an optional and voluntary blind bet made by a player after posting the small and big blinds, but before cards are dealt. Straddles are typically used only in cash games played with fixed blind structures. Straddles are normally not permitted in tournament formats. InterPoker is one of the few online sites that has 'straddle' tables allowing players to place a straddle bet prior to cards being dealt.
Straight
Five consecutive cards of any suit.
Straight Flush
Five consecutive cards of the same suit.
Structure
The limits put on the blinds/ante, bets, and raises in any particular game.
Suit
A characteristic of a playing card. The card being either of Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, or Spades.
Suited Connectors
Two cards that are consecutive in rank and of the same suit.

Table
The surface on which poker is played and where the games are dealt.
Texas Hold'em
This is also the name for Hold'em, the most popular form of online poker where plaeyrs receive two cards to start and then share a community board of 5 cards. The term Texas Hold'em comes where the game originated and was commonly played.
Three Flush
Three cards of the same suit.
Three of a Kind
Three cards of the same number or face value ("trips").
Tight
A player who doesn't play many pots. A tight game is one that doesn't have much action.
Tournament
A poker competition, normally with an entry fee and prizes.
Tournament Fee
The tournament fee (or house fee) is usually payable with all buy-in tournaments.
Trips
Three of a kind. This differs from a set where three of a kind is made when a pocket pair connects with one card on the flop to make three of a kind.
Turn
In flop games, this is the fourth card dealt. It is the third round of betting.
Two Pair
A hand consisting of two different pairs.

Underpair
A pocket pair of lower value than the highest card on the board.

Value
As in "bet for value". This means that you would actually like your opponents to call your bet (as opposed to a bluff). Generally it's because you have the best hand. However, it can also be a draw which, given enough callers, has a positive expectation.
Visible Cards
These are cards dealt face up to each Player. Players use these cards to complete a five-card combination.

Weak
Weak' may be used to describe a player who folds too many hands or makes lots of calls however rarely bets or raises.
Winning Hand
A winning hand is one that you get paid for.
World Series of Poker
A Hold 'em tournament with a $10,000 buy-in held every July in Las Vegas.
WSOP
Abbreviation for World Series of Poker.
